CATATONIC SCHIZOPHRENIA

Schizophrenia is caused due to the problems when our brain development is at an early stage. The parts or rather than say areas of the brain which are rich in chemical dopamine are most affected with the disease of schizophrenia. The cause of the underdevelopment of brain pathways is a controversial topic. People suffering from catatonic schizophrenia need special care, services, supervision, etc.

The main motive of the treatment of schizophrenia is to reduce the symptoms of the disease and thus decreasing the chances of return of symptoms. Antipsychotics are the medications which are used for the treatment of schizophrenia. The medicines do not completely cure the disease but are used to reduce the symptoms of the disease.

Other medications which are used for treating schizophrenia include haldol, navane, mellaril, trilafon, thorazine, prolixin and stelazine. Electroconvlusive therapy (ECT) is also used for the treatment of schizophrenia. It is a procedure electrodes are attached to the person’s head and then series of electric shocks are given to the brain.

The causes of catatonic schizophrenia are various physiological problems, biological problems such as early development of brain, abnormality of brain and various environmental problems. The various symptoms and signs of catatonic schizophrenia include unusual behavior to family and friends, anxiety, social withdrawal, declination in the daily functional abilities of a person, patient’s interest is lost in everything and poor hygiene.

Catatonic schizophrenia can be treated by means of various ways. But the treatment is most effective when it is given at an early stage of the disorder. The same medications called antipsychotics are used for the treatment of catatonic schizophrenia. The medications do not really cure the disease but they help in relieving to the most troubling symptoms which are thinking problems, hallucinations and delusions.

Rehabilitation can also be used as a cure of catatonic schizophrenia. This process has a focus on the social skills and job training to help people of the schizophrenia community so that they can live an independent life.

Other type of cure is Individual psychotherapy. This therapy helps a person in order to understand his/her illness better and they must learn coping and problem solving skills in order to cope up with the problems of life. One more therapy includes group therapy. This therapy is performed in order to provide the mutual support to the catatonic schizophrenia.

Another therapy used for treating catatonic schizophrenia is Family Therapy. This therapy helps family to deal with the persons suffering from schizophrenia more effectively.
